Here is a fun project to make camping a little more comfortable.
This is a rope sprung bed, this design is very loosely copied from a medieval one.
It’s made from construction grade timber and built using hand tools.
Reassembly takes about 30 minutes. We use an air bed on top for a mattress, but you could use a futon mattress instead.

I was experimenting with carving on this to add eye catching details. Hence the various styles of leg and cross beam.

Make sure the ropes are pulled very tight. This is where the phrase “sleep tight” comes from! There are several options for stringing the rope. I chose this method for its simplicity.

The bed is very comfortable and relatively quick to make. We found it needs a central beam to stop the mattress sagging in the middle.
Now it has been trialled and proven I’ll be making some modifications to it over the winter to make it quicker to assemble. More to follow, so watch this space!
